Ars Technica decide to pit the iOS 4 web browser on the iPhone 4 against the one bundled with Android 2.2, the mobile web browser touted by Google as the fastest in the market today, and the results were quite telling. They did a javascript showdown, and the winner by a mile is Android 2.2 (on a Nexus One).
Engadget, meanwhile, took things a little further and made this side-by-side real-world performance video comparing the two mobile web browsers. Similar to the test set-up of Ars Technica, Engadget also used an iPhone 4 and a Nexus One loaded with Android 2.2 for this experiment. As expected, with flash turned on, the speed of Android 2.2’s web browser was almost negligible, and in most instances, was actually a tad bit slower than the iPhone 4.
With flash disabled, however, the Android 2.2 web browser consistently beat mobile Safari on the iPhone 4, not by much, but still, a clear winner in this web browser battle.
I wonder though, when Frash is released for jailbroken iPhones, will the mobile Safari browser still be as fast or will the added Flash support cripple it just like did the Android 2.2 browser? That’s something we’ll have to look forward to if and when comex finally rolls out Frash to the public.
