It’s finally here, but this one is a mystery. Does the 1.1.4 firmware update pave the way for SDK? No one knows what it fixes exactly just yet. You can get it through iTunes if it’s iTunes 7.6.1.9. Engadget brings good news in the form of a healthy jailbroken 1.1.3 getting the aforementioned update. It’s a sizable software update at 162.1MB. ZiPhone works on this update, according to several who have tried it.

If you’re on of those Apple buyers who prefer refurbished Apple products over the factory mint condition alternative, refurbished iPod Touches are now available. Apple only has stock for the 8GB version and you can get it for only $249, a $50 savings from the original $299. Of you think that’s awfully pricey for a second-hand product, know that the fifty bucks represents a $17 discount from the original price. Apple refurbs are guaranteed with a limited one-year warranty.

Apple introduced a 2GB Shuffle for $69 recently and cut the price of the old 1GB to $49. Did they really need to? Jonathan Weinberg thinks that Apple is in danger of cheapening its image while it drops the price of one product and then another.
We disagree. The iPod Shuffle came from a $79 price point, which was too pricey for a 1GB player with no screen. This is half the price of a 4GB iPod Nano, a new player with video support and a sleek UI. Besides, the Shuffle is still $10 more than its nearest competitor the Zen Stone.

Apple may cut iPod Touch and iPhone prices again as early as the end of this month. After February we may see 16GB iPhones and 32GB iPod Touches cut by $100 to make room for iPhone SDK and even a 3G iPhone. The 8GB iPod Touch may be stop production altogether.
Presumably, it makes sense for Apple not to release a more expensive 3G iPhone or add a premium on iPhone SDK like they did with iPod Touch Maps, etc. A price cut even makes more sense amidst the somewhat disappointing iPhone sales. Apple selling less than the anticipated 5 million units by January and an obvious decline with the dissipating iPhone hype can only mean that bargain hunters are not getting into the iPhone action. Right? If this new set of price cuts also comes with a refund.

The Apple Store is back in business offering new goodies:
16GB iPhone - this is great news for people who have always wanted an expandable memory for the Apple phone. Now you don’t need a microSD slot with a 16GB of onboard storage. Price is $499.
32GB iPod Touch - Only $499. This doubles the storage of the $399 16GB iPod Touch. This is pretty cheap for a 32GB flash drive. Is this the similar SSD in laptops? Must be two 16GB flash chips but we’re not sure the iPod Touch has room for two 16GB chips. If this is a 32GB SSD, it may mark the beginning of cheaper SSD laptops.

Finally, a device that makes transferring music from one iPod to another less of a hassle! The miShare allows you to plug in two iPods and copy the last track played or a pre-selected photo folder with just one press of the button. Press the button longer and you can duplicate all files stored in the On-the-Go playlist, for easy multiple-file copying. The miShare only costs $99 a pop, but it doesn’t work with the iPhone or the iTouch. It does work with all iPods with the 30-pin dock connector (Mini, Nano, 3G, 4G, Video (5G), and Classic (6G) models).

The subprime mortgage crisis is taking its toll on the ever-popular iPod. Apple is anticipating slower sales this year and has asked its suppliers to slow down iPod production. The information comes from the Banc of America. Production cuts are expected to be between 10% and 20% compared to early January and 30% compared to December. “Current production expectations for March imply a 5–10% year-over-year unit decline, versus our expectation for 5% year-over-year unit sales growth during the March quarter, likely implying a continuing inventory rightsizing and sales sluggishness,” says analyst Scott Craig.
As for the iPhone, there have been concerns that the lukewarm acceptance in Europe will result into a cut back in production. Mr. Craig: Read the rest »

Guitar freak iPhone/iPod Touch owners might want to get their calloused fingertips on this one. PocketGuitar is a Google Code project by a guy called Shinya Kasatani that allows you to play not just boring, virtual-guitar chord progressions on your iPhone or iPod Touch. The application will even let you use the songs on iPod! It’s been tested on the iPod Touch 1.1.1 and seems to be working fine. You can get the PocketGuitar for free under the “Toys” category in the ModMyiFone.com Community Sources. Make sure you have the latest “Community Sources” package. Some people reported having problems installing the app, but you can troubleshoot that here.

So what do you get for $19.99?
First is a GPS substitute called Google Maps with WiFi triangulation. This is a pretty neat feature, especially when you’re in an area with a lot of WiFi devices. It’ll pin-point your location on your iPod Touch Google Maps interface without an actual GPS.
Second, you will get email support for POP3 or IMAP mail services. The application supports rich html and displays graphics and images.
Third, your iPod Touch will have Notes, a great app that I’ve always been complaining the iPod Touch lacks. You can now write memos to yourself, poems, short stories and what-not using the iPod Touch. Weather and Stoocks are also in, which makes our Apple PMP an e-Book reader PLUS.
