iPhone Dev Team has been hit hard by Apple’s b103 update on the iPhone 3G. Their Pwnage too works for the following:
iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 - Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
iPod Touch with 2.0 - Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).
iPhone (3G) with 2.0 - Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).

Right now, the jailbreak software will not support iPhone 3G unlock and iPhone Dev will not release it yet until they have it just perfect. When? We have no idea.

If you’re looking for an unlocked iPhone 3G and can’t seem to find one in your area, maybe Hong Kong’s Union Camera, Ltd. can help you out. They are selling iPhone 3G, the original and all brand new, not refurbs, to interested buyers. Minimum order is 1,000 units. It’s available in 8GB and 16GB. If you don’t believe me, go to their Alibaba page and wait for costumer service to go online and you can ask Union Camera yourself if they do have unlocked 3G iPhones in stock. Ships a day after receipt of payment.

DesbloqueioBr was the first iPhone 3G unlocker using a hardware solution - the same solution (reprogrammed SIM card adapter) that first unlocked the iPhone EDGE. The Brazilian hack will not be available for free and we’re looking at a possible $250 to $375 to break free from the debilitating roaming charges of AT&T O2 and other iPhone eclusive distributors. As for the iPhone 2.0 software, we don’t know if the DesbloquieoBr SIM unlocker will do anything to it, though it would be stupid to suggest, SIM adapter would also open up the software for non-App Store applications.

The first-gen iPhone was unlocked for the first time by Turbo SIM. It’s not a software jailbreak but it’s a simple method for those users willing to shell out $80 for a blank SIM. It took the unlockers four days after the iPhone was released, doing exactly what was done on the original iPhone, using a SIM adapter to fool the new iPhone. I wonder why this wasn’t done any sooner, because with over a million iPhone 3Gs in users hands now, the majority of whom may not think getting tied to one network, esepecially when traveling and having to pay roaming fees, is not such a good idea.
Our procedure consist in using one SIM adapter to simulate a fake IMSI test card. Instead of the AT&T IMSI like in the universals.
The unlock method is not posted online yet, and honestly we are not sure it will become available for free.

Apple, Inc announced today July 14th that 3 days after iPhone 3G’s release, already a million units have flown off the shelf. This is just the first leg of the release. France will follow on July 17th and the rest of the world later this year.
“iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”
Also, users have been madly downloading applications from the App Store. Some of these apps are free, but there was yet no information how much Apple earned from selling iPhone 2.0 applications over the weekend. Here’s a distribution chart of all the iPhone and iPod Touch apps available through the App Store.

Geohot, the first iPhone jailbraker, will release his iPhone 2.0 jailbreak soon - that is, if iPhone Dev Team, with an apology to Zibri. Apparently, iPhone Dev has come into some difficulty in getting PwnageTool 2.0 ready for a public release.
In giving his warning to the Team, geohot explains the difference between iPhone unlock and iPhone jailbreak:
The possiblity of unlocking, which is very distinct from jailbreaking, is based entirely on the baseband bootloader. Apple doesn’t appear to upgrade the bootloader on phones in the field, probably for fear of breaks. So any old iPhones out there today, regardless of version, can be unlocked.
The iPhone 3G uses a different bootloader, which I believe there aren’t any known exploits in yet. So no unlock.
George Hotz goes on to elaborate and specify why he thinks iPhone Dev should have the pwnage tool ready by now:
There is a known exploit in iBoot, on both the old and 3G iPhones. The “the specific date/time is not firm yet” pwnage tool will leverage it to jailbreak all 2.0 software iPhones, 3G and otherwise. Dev team, that date better be soon or I might just have to release yiPhone. The iBoot exploit is yours, use it. You wouldn’t want a repeat of ZiPhone now…
The last sentence is very interesting indeed.
Here is iPhone Dev Team’s response.

One of the most well-known third-party application available for people running the iPhone 2.0 software on their iPhone or iPod Touch is Super Monkey ball from SEGA. The iPhone game has reached legendary status even before it’s been made available through the App Store. The idea of putting a “full console game”on the iPhone is enough to draw in some of the Apple hype to the SEGA game. TUAW and Gizmodo have come out with brief reviews of the game. Big applause to the graphics and size of the game (you have to go through 100 levels to finish). Giz says it’s addictive and frustrating and TUAW echoes them by saying the game is “extremely hard to control” with the current calibration of the tilt sensors. If you’re thinking of playing Super Monkey Ball on the subway, this game will definitely push “challenging” into new heights.
Even with the price tag of $9.99, it’s one app in the App Store you have to recommend for yourself.

Unlocked! The iPhone OS 2.0 software has been unlocked and it’s now available for your eyes only. Once again, it’s the iPhone Dev Team on their jailbreak exploits. This is actually iPhone 1.2.0 unlock part deux for the iPhone Dev Team dubbed PwnageTool 2.0.
iPhone Dev Team introduces their iPhone 2.0 unlock tool:
So guys, below is a link to the video of the upcoming PwnageTool 2.0
Many many hours have gone into this and now it should be as easy enough for your grandmother to use.
We’ve added lots of new features, including 2.0 support, spotlight file indexing of .ipsws, canned websearches, installer custom configuration, custom root partitions and various other things that you’ll see on the release. Release date is soon although not this weekend.
Yes, it takes some time and there way too many steps for the average users. Anyone know if iPhone Dev Team plan to reduce the clickage to one or two?

With iPhone 2.0 out and with it the ability of iPhone users EDGE or 3G as well as iPod Touch users to use third-party software, what can one expect from licensed apps from Apple? That is, assuming you do wouldn’t rather go the jailbreak way (our little poll overwhelmingly favors jailbreak, FYI).
Pinch Media gives us a bird’s eye view of the App Store. You can call this a snapshot of the App Store a day after launch. More apps will be added eventually, of course. At what rate, we have no idea There were 652 applications available when Pinch Media did their categorization, 150 of these applications were completely free. see graph above. There are a good amount of one-dollar apps as well. But, frighteningly, about a hundred cost a whopping 10 dollars.
The vast majority of applications are in the entertainment and games categories and only 10% of these types of apps are free. Most social networking apps are of course free as well as the news apps. See another chart after the break.

The iPhone 2.0 software for the iPod Touch can now be downloaded from iTunes for $9.95. This will enable iPod Touch users to download and use applications from the App Store. There are over 500 third-party apps on the App Store now and about a quarter of these are free. Users of iPod Touch may not be able to benefit from a new hardware or a price downgrade but at least games on the iTouch will not be interrupted by an incoming call.
