The iPhone Dev Team has some pretty new for us. They have achieved a hack to the iPhone 3G baseband while leaving everything else alone. This is a software-only solution, as iPhone Dev Team explains it in their own words:
We have accomplished this by being able to execute our own code on the baseband that allows us to circumvent security checks and flash the baseband with older, disallowed firmware. Please note this has been accomplished using software only, the iPhone 3G has not been disassembled or hardware modified in any way.
The Team’s earlier PwnageTool 2.0 only provided a jailbreak for the iPhone 2.0 software but no unlock for the iPhone 3G. In short, users are stillnot free from those roaming charges from the iPhone exclusive carriers. The great thing about this hack is that it’s really a simple process, say the Team, and it’s comig realy soon.
Also visit this iPhone 3G “unlock” software with a $39.95 price tag and fill up the poll.

Gaming on the iPhone seems to be the app that gets the most attention. For a device with no gaming buttons, this is pretty unusual. Fortunately, there is no limitation to software inventiveness and now we have the NES.app with accelerometer support. Gizmodo tested it with Super Mario and found tilting the iPhone for run a much more natural way to control the game than the virtual buttons. Head on over to Gizmodo for the video. You’ll need to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch first.

We’ve only heard of free iPhone 2.0 jailbreak or unlock methods, but what about solutions that come with a price tag? iPhoneinfused will unlock your iPhone 2.0 software and free you from AT&T’s and other iPhone exclusive wireless providers’ expensive roaming charges for the low price of $39.95. The only problem here is that they cannot possibly show us their method. Are they stealing from iPhone Dev Team, geohot and selling the method to unsuspecting iPhone 3G owners?
I’m not going to try this out myself but the $39.95 will buy you a membership with full support and a money back guarantee. This is both a jailbreak and unlock for the iPhone and iPod Touch and absolutely caveat emptor.

Apple has not released the details yet, but 20 more countries is virtually confirmed for the second wave release of the iPhone 3G. After the 22nd of August, 30 more countries will be added, making a total of 50 countries in addition to the largest markets where the iPhone 3G was initially launched. Above is the list of additional countries to get the iPhone 3G. It’s a long way to go and keeping the hype will be quite a challenge even for Apple. Then again, we’re pretty sure a more desirable phone will not come out in the intervening time.

The video, unfortunately, is devoid of sound but you can only imagine how addictive a racing game could be when properly integrated to iPhone’s UI. There are onscreen controls for the wheel and gear shift and you can also use iPhone’s built-in accelerometer. It’s the first real-time multiplayer game on your iPhone. They’ve got the Bugatti Veyron and Ferrari Enzo, if you’re interested in driving these way too expensive vehicles.

Current software jailbreaks of iPhone 2.0 are living up to their authors’ promises: Apple will not be able to brick them. The 2.1 firmware update, which is coming at an unannounced time but probably very soon, will introduce better turn-by-turn instructions on the iPhone 3G’s GPS function. It can track direction and speed while you’re traveling, which is pretty awesome. Along with the 2.1 firmware is a new version of the SDK.

The second free iPhone 3G and iPhone 2.0 jailbreak goes by the name WinPwn. It’s an easy way to jailbreak iPhone 2.0 software on the original and 3G version of iPhone. As the name suggest, this supports Windows. This is not 100% guaranteed and there are reported bugs with Cydia installation of Windows XP, but what the hey, it’s free, right? The WinPwn jailbreak also supports 1.1.4.

Twenty-two more countries will receive their iPhone 3G starting August 22. Apple COO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer announced the date but forgot to mention which 20 countries will finally have their iPhones. Despite some supply strains the Apple execs expect Q3 to be their best selling iPhone quarter ever. Better than Q2? With iPhone 3G already selling twice as fast as iPhone EDGE, Q3 is definitely one for the record books.
With a price ($199 + contract) that rocks, availability of third-party apps at the App Store, and at least one jailbreak software already out for additional third-party apps, the iPhone is one tech product that will remain in the fixation of contemporary civilization for a while.
Btw, our most popular post these days has been this iPhone 2.0 jailbreak post from March. A related post (on the iPhone jailbreak) has become our most popular post with a poll. Right now, 93% ofour poll takers say they want to jailbreak their iPhone. This despite the App Store receiving over 25 million download requests. Wow!

The iPhone Dev Team missed to make their jailbreak software compatible with Windows so someone had to do it for them. The Pwnage tool is quite circuitous and I myself would rather pay $20 for a non-free software. The jailbreak and unlock first-gen iPhone running iPhone 2.0 software at this link with the steps. As usual, do the jailbreaking and unlocking at your own risk.

Now you can jailbreak your iPhone 2.0 for free (if you own a Mac!) with iPhone Dev Team’s PwnageTool 2.0. It jailbreaks and unlock and jailbreak iPhone, jailbreak iPhone 3G and the iPod Touch if they are running the iPhone 2.0 software. Only the 2.0 software is supported by this jailbreak. THIS IS NOT AN UNLOCK SOFTWARE FOR iPHONE 3G… yet.
Update 1: Just to clear up some confusion over what this actually does: yes, it jailbreaks and unlocks older iPhones, and jailbreaks iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touches. We only support the 2.0 firmwares.
Update 2: It looks like there aren’t enough TCP ports on that server, so _BigBoss_ has generously offered to mirror it.
Update 3: If you get Error 1600 from iTunes (or if you see in your log a failure to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw), try: mkdir “~/Library/iTunes/Device Support” ; if that directory already exists, remove any files in it. Then re-run PwnageTool.
