It isn’t cheap, based on the lack of information on storage. Since SmartQ isn’t announcing the capacity, we assume users will have to depend on microSD cards to store files. The 7-inch touchscreen tablet has 1080p video support, OTG and WiFi. Other types of connectivity include Bluetooth and HDMI out. Now, why don’t I think that a $220 pricing is too much for such a well-featured device? Well, there are cheaper smartphones, and they can make calls. The other noteworthy ommission is the absence of a user interface demo. We know the V7 uses an ARM11 processor, but which OS is it running on? The Zol article three sets of possibilities (options): Ubuntu Linux, Windows CE 6.0 or Google Android. I’ll believe it when they send us a demo video.

With the V7, the SmartQ V5 will introduce the V series internet tablets to consumers in China and, hopefully, around the world. With an 600 MHz ARM11 processor, adequate 256MB DDR2 RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR and OTG, the SmartQ V5 is just a few inches short of the SmartQ V7. It’s practically the same MID, except the smaller 4.3-inch touchscreen LCD on the more pocket-friendly V5. The V5 shouldn’t be mistaken to the sleeker looking SmartQ 5 WiFi PMP. This one is 1080p high-def device with HDMI out, boasting 1920 × 1080 video resolution. The SmartQ V5 also looks easy to produce in quantity and should be available in an affordable retail price.

Note: can’t help but imagine SmartQ’s latest devices with a more powerful still-Arm-based Qualcomm Snapdragon processor or with an Intel Atom processor platform like Menlow or Moorestown.

Multimedia Internet devices are invading the Chinese market and SmartQ is one brand name to watch out for. The SmartQ V7 Internet Tablet is one of the more intriguing MID designs out there, though we will not be surprised if this were only a relabel of the SmartQ 7. They sure look the same. The V7 will follow the SmartQ V5, which we’ll post about later and which will therefore make the SmartQ V series of internet tablets.. As for the V7, it will be 1080p full high-def capable with HDMI out like the V5. It has a 7-inch LCD touchscreen, WiFi, Bluetooth and OTG. It is powered by an Arm 11 processor (how difficult is it to give this one a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor?) and will have 256MB of RAM. It’s obviously a stylus touchscreen device with. We’ll report more details about the V7 once it comes. For now, we have another photo after the break.

Little did we know another question, just as crucial, would pop up. What color do we want our SmartQ 7 to be? The problem is the fast launch date. The MID was announced only a few days ago and it’s supposed to be a successor of the SmartQ 5, which few people and none that we know of outside China had a chance to properly review. We know the SmartQ 7 runs on Linux, it’s got 7 inches of touchscreen space and it’s WiFi-enabled. Now we want to know how this thing actually runs.

Here at last is a little known brand that has ambition and seems to have the means to make it to the very top. Well, they’re not stopping. The 7-inch WVGA SmartQ 7 is something you have to get excited about. It’s a sleek device with very interesting buttons on the bottom of the screen and on the side, WiFi-enabled of course, running Linux. The 4500mAh is goo enough to play music for 48 continuous hours. If that is true, we got ourselves a netbook killer right here. It’s available in at least three colors. Pending a hands-on review, I’d say it’s one of the more important PMP news this year.

No pricing and availability for the SmartQ 7 just yet. We hope to have more details soon (processor, build material, etc.) as we’re sure our readers will be looking forward for updates.

I can’t wait to get a look at how this will actually work. Most of the other accessories you’ll need to fully use Ubuntu will be available through USB dongle, and, hopefully, a decent roll-up keyboard will be available when this comes out.

SmartQ has been one of the more visible Chinese companies in the PMP market. Their latest announcement, the SmartQ MID, sends a clear message to industry watchers: SmartQ means business. The SmartQ 5 may be a little too late to compete with the COWON Q5, nevertheless it is unmistakable the two devices have many features in common. The SmartQ MID has a smaller 4.3-inch touchscreen but resolution matches that of the Cowon Q5 at 800 x 480 pixels. Like the Q5, the SmartQ 5 has WiFi, Bluetooth and even GPS via USB. No 3G though on both devices. If you remember how pricey the Q5 was when it was announced, it would be best to expect a shocker when SmartQ 5 turns out to be fairly affordable.
