Still don’t know what the Zii Egg is? Here’s the official description:

The Zii EGG is an energy efficient handheld StemCell Computer based on the powerful ZiiLABS ZMS-05 media-rich applications processor. Besides its multi-touch 3.5-inch LCD screen, it can also output HD video at up to 1080p. The ZMS-05’s 24 floating-point processors deliver up to 8 GFLOPS of raw processing power, while the StemCell Computing’s flexible architecture allows stunning display of 3D graphics on a small handheld battery powered device. Release to end user will be around the October time frame.

Intended as an OEM product, Creative is unlikely to mass produce Zii Egg on its own, which means we are totally caught offguard by this latest announcement. A Zii Egg smartphone running Android? Problem is, even if the show turns out to be an impressive success, there’s still the issue of too many names for far too many vaguely distinguishable products. I mean Plaszma OS? Stemcell Computing? And just what the heck is Zii anyway. Honestly, all I’m ever likely to remember about ZiiLabs and this Zii business is that the Zii Egg is pretty much an iPhone clone. So, if Creative is listening. First order of business in that Summit: explain in largely visual terms what exactly you are trying to sell.

If you’re on the lookout for an unassuming PMP from a well-known brand, you might want to take a look at the ZEN X-Fi2. It’s a 3-inch touchscreen player that doesn’t stray too far from previous Creative models. For the short list of features, go to our previous X-Fi2 post. Creative has three versions now available for delivery. The 8GB is $129.99, 16GB $179.99, while the 32GB is $229.99. Nothing special on this PMP–no OLED screen, no HD support, not Zii software.

Back when the iPod wasn’t known for its technological breakthroughs, Creative PMPs were a decent low-priced alternative. I don’t know what niche market they appeal to now.

It’s a touchscreen PMP for the desperately poor, I think. EpiZENter says Creative may not get into the touchscreen business altogether if the X-Fi2 doesn’t sell. I think they should focus on Zii.

The most sought after Creative future-ware remains just that, future-ware. The ZEN X-Fi2 is a successor of the ZEN X-Fi, a tad more portable and a touchscreen. The hardware design does not stray far from Creative’s previous ZEN PMPs. It also offers pricing that will be very familiar to fans of Creative.

Dapreview’s DaHarder has been lucky enough to be one among the chosen few who’ve been sent the new Zii Egg PMP from Creative. The device is very promising, and should be offering a first class multimedia experience to owners. Once it get properly branded, of course. DaHarder mentions the OLED screen and the sound quality (video below) of the Zii Egg, which are superb. Hopefully, it won’t take too much time before Creative gets the Zii Egg market ready. We’d be more than ready by then.

It’s also official that Singapore’s Creative is back with a vengeance. Let me just say this on the get-go. As a manufacturer, Creative is wiser than Meizu, waiting until it has a product ready for launch before leaking anything. The Creative Zii Egg is a definite iPod Touch competitor with goodies like WiFi, capacitive 10-point multi-gesture touchscreen, dual camera (one being an HD video recorder), GPS and up to 32GB of memory. Inside is the soon-to-be-famous Zii StemCell platform dubbed Zii Plaszma, which is an Android OS in combo with Creative’s Zii chip. The Creative Zii could could be sold for as low as $199. The Plasza is being sold to manufacturers as an OS, SDK kit and hardware.

Creative hasn’t officially packaged the Zii PMP for retail, so we might see a different-looking hardware when it comes out. Right this moment, though, we are reeling with

Singaporean manufacturer Creative has just unveiled (sort of) a touchscreen PMP. The device is dubbed Zii and there will be a developer’s version codenamed Zii Egg. From the photo, it will have an iPhonesque form factor and an HD camera. Hopefully, it will also have an OLED screen and a good OS like a version of Android. It’s too early to call the Creative Zii an iPhone clone but sure is heading in that direction to me. Now, I have no ideas myself, but I wish someone could design a PMP or phone form factor that makes room for a lot of screen space but remains pocketable like the iPhone. Any ideas, dear readers?

Also, take note that Creative has previously announced the Zii Stemcell computing. Will we finally see what Zii Stemcell is?
