We weren’t too impressed with the Samsung IceTouch, to be honest, but it appears the Korean company has bigger plans for the new OLED technology… 14-inch transparent laptop displays. The IceTouch will have the enviable task of making consumers feel comfortable about transparent OLED screens, though at $332 it’s a little steep. Next in line are widescreen SatNav devices. It’s easy to imagine we’ll get transparent laptops pretty soon.

This is a very interesting negative news for gadgets. Meizu used to be one of the best PMP makers out of China. Then they got into the iPhone clone fever. If there’s such a thing as a career ending gadget for manufacturers, the Meizu M8 is one for company CEO J Wong. Spending time and money in development chasing the shadow of the iPhone. Today, Meizu is a mere shadow of itself. A one-product non-wonder of a company, and it doesn’t seem that they are going to stop day dreaming soon with the recent announcements of Meizu M8 iteration the Meizu M9. That’s why this recent piece of news from J. Wong is quite a relief for followers of the company and, I’m sure, the more rational Meizu fans as well. After the Apple iPad announcement, some fans began posting their idea of a Meizu mPad, purportedly to rival the Apple iPad. Jack Wong’s response was curt:

” Stop the photoshop work. I do not have the slightest interest in creating a big MP4! Not enough to lose face”.

Is Meizu CEO J. Wong taking a swipe at the iPad or has he finally come to his senses?

Remember the greatest iPhone clone that ever was? That’s the Meizu M8, which since its release (we don’t remember when, and it certainly wasn’t as important as the two-year wait we gave this baby) has had a few iterations that became as much a success as the original. Before we totally forget the China company’s great folly (Meizu, would you believe used to make pretty good PMPs), they’ve released a promo ad for the Meizu M8’s new user interface. Despite the apparent lack of interest world wide on the Meizu M8 “iPhone clone,” the company is keen on expanding the interest of the public on their great gamble. The Meizu MyStore just appeared on a firmware update, which also included a new user interface–that’s the firmware with release date 2009-12-07. The Meizu MyStore hasn’t launched yet but you don’t have to wait much longer because it’s going to go live this month. Based on the video demo, the MyStore seem to have a few applications already available for purchase. Now, we’re not going to judge Meizu’s wisdom here, and we’re not sure that China isn’t full of software developers interested in earning serious money out of the Meizu M8 fan club. Side-by-side, I have to admit that the Meizu M8 can match iPhone in looks. Ultimately, in China it’s going to be features like hardware sleekness and video playback that are going to make the difference with the Chinese people. As the China iPhone will be sold with the WiFi disabled, features like 5 MP camera, Bluetooth 2.0 that supports file sync and support for multiple video files available in the Meizu M8 may be too much a temptation for Chinese users.

Though the Meizu M8 isn’t going to be as far from iPhone as we’ve all been hoping in its next few refreshes, the user interface seems a lot more polished than before. Can you say “So-fist-ti-cated”? The crisp high-definition icons seem to be only the beginning of it. We got a dock at the bottom of the screen that seems to say there’s going to be real multitasking. Meizume says it’s coming in August.
