This time around, the iPhone Dev Team beat Geohot to the punch with the release of the first iPhone 3.1.3 jailbreak in the form of PwnageTool 3.1.5 for the Mac platform. This should definitely bring a smile to the faces of jailbreaking aficionados out there interested in upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1.3.

This is compatible with all versions of the iPhone and iPod Touch though it won’t work on iPhone 3G S and 2G iPod Touch units with the new bootrom loaded on it. However, the iPhone Dev Team still warns people who enjoy their unlocked and jailbroken iPhones to stay away from this latest iPhone firmware update unless they really feel the need to upgrade to it to address some serious issues. iPhone 3G S users who are already on 3.1.3 also need to downgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 for this particular jailbreak to work.

They have a bunch of other precautions listed on their site that they strongly recommend you read before trying this out. If you still have the same desire to give PwnageTool 3.1.5 a go after reading all their warnings, go ahead. Just don’t forget to hit us up in the comments section below as we’d certainly love to hear your take on this latest PwnageTool.

The largest smartphone software has now officially become open source. Symbian has been the leading OS for smartphone for many years and has been migrating to become fully open source since 2008.

“When the Symbian Foundation was created, we set the target of completing the open-source release of the platform by mid-2010, and it’s because of the extraordinary commitment and dedication from our staff and our member companies that we’ve reached it well ahead of schedule,” said Symbian Foundation chief executive Lee Williams.

The Symbian^3 will be feature complete and should include a marked advance than previous Symbian versions particularly the popular Series 60 in Nokia smartphones. Nokia is a controlling investor in the Symbian Foundation spending hundreds of millions on the development of the Symbian software. The entry of the Apple iPhone and Google Android has put Symbian into an unenviable position of being a dinosaur.

If Google’s got Android, China Mobile’s got their Open Mobile System (OMS) aka Ophone platform to brag about, and even more so today as it’s now finally hit version 2.0. Yeah, you could argue that it’s still based on the Android OS, but hey, they’ve customized the heck out of it so that they can truly call it an OS of their own. So what’s new with this latest iteration? OMS v2.0 supports voice recognition, Scalable Vector Graphics UI elements, and get this, Windows Mobile API support as well. We’re not quite sure right now what this means as far the future working relationship between Windows Mobile and the OMS platform is concerned. Will Windows Mobile apps run natively on the Ophone or will OMS-friendly versions of Windows Mobile apps be released in the near future? These are just some of the questions we’re waiting to be answered alongside the date as to when it will be released and on what phones it will be featured on.

The Nokia N900 is truly a remarkable device. We’ve seen how capable it is in running both Maemo and Android with ease, and now, we’re treated to a video showing the N900 running on Mac OS X 10.3.

There’s no question that you’ll be able to install Mac OS X 10.3 on the N900 with the help of PearPC, a Power PC emulator, but as you’ll notice in the video, it’s definitely far from being usable as it took nearly 2 hours just to boot to the OS and for the About This Mac to display properly. Nonetheless, it’s still a commendable achievement, and we applaud the guy who did this for his patience in trying this out.

With that being said though, we’ll certainly be more impressed if someone manages to come out with a hackintosh video showcasing the Nokia N900 running on Mac OS X Snow Leopard that’s completely usable on the Finnish made device.

So, what’s the next best thing to do if you already own an iPhone or iPod Touch? You guessed it – convert your iPhone/iPod Touch to an iPad with the help from a few apps from the App Store and Cydia.

Winterboard is used to install the The Simple iPad theme while Shrink is needed to reduce the size of the icons.

We’ve seen how it’s possible to dual-boot the Nokia N900 to Android, and now we have one of the easiest ways to dual-boot a Windows Mobile device to Android thanks to Gen.Y DualBOOT.

As you’ll notice in the video, using it is as easy as clicking your preferred OS of choice. Do note, however, that this is just a bootlauncher app and Android does not come bundled with it. You’ll have to install that one on your own. This is also only available for a select number of Windows Mobile devices, and currently, there isn’t a similar bootlauncher app available for Android that’ll allow you to dual-boot to Windows Mobile.

With that being said, if you want to try this out on your compatible Windows Mobile phone, you can find the necessary files and instructions over at this thread at the XDA forums.

We’ve seen a couple of new tablet PCs already this week including the Dell Android tablet (aka Dell Mini 5) and the Windows 7-powered Pegatron slate. We’re expecting more to be unveiled or announced in the upcoming days, and hopefully, one of them will be the long-rumored Apple tablet (aka iSlate).

The latest on this much talked about device says that a multitouch version of iWork will be bundled with the iSlate once its released in the market. A former Apple engineer further goes on to say that “the tablet should offer any number of unique multitouch experiences — for example, three fingers down and rotate could mean ‘open an application.”

As such is the case, speculation now is that it will actually be a full-functioning multitouch capable computer (Macbook Touch, perhaps?) as opposed to simply being a multimedia device as previous reports suggested. If this is true, then it’ll definitely be retailing at a much higher price. Anyway, until Apple makes their Tablet official, all we have to rely on are rumors and speculations which, I must admit, is getting to be pretty tiring already.

We’ve already heard how upbeat and optimistic the folks over at Mozilla are with their FireFox Mobile browser aka Fennec. It’s been available in beta form since early December for Nokia N900 users, but for those who have put off downloading it and giving it a try until a more stable version comes out, here’s some good news for you. FireFox Mobile RC1 is now finally available to usher in the new year.

You can download it here, but if you have the beta version installed already on your phone, you should receive an update soon. Hopefully, a final working version that’s compatible on a wider variety of phones won’t be far behind.

iPhone credit card readers are as unique as they come. So far, Square is the only group that has one albeit still not being available to consumers, and even now has a website to promote their Square iPhone credit card payment system.

However, come CES next week, this may no longer be the case as we hear Mophie will also be coming out with a similar device of their own. There’s no name yet or working details about what they will be unveiling, but we do have this snazzy concept design above that definitely beats what Square hands down in the aesthetics department. Of course, if you’re familiar with Mophie who’s more popularly known for their battery backs and cases for the iPhone, iPod Touch and other iPod models, this shouldn’t come as a surprise anymore. We’ll have more on this once the festivities at CES begins.
