Hot off the release of the iPhone 3.0 and iPhone 3G S, Apple has now made available iPhone OS 3.1 beta to developers. We’re still not quite sure what exciting new features this latest firmware will come with, but taking a cue from its name, it’s probably more a set of bug fixes with only a handful of new treats to spice up the package. We’ll report more on this once additional info is made available, but nonetheless, this is a sure sign that work on an iPhone 3.1 jailbreak/unlock should now finally commence.

Yes, the iPhone Dev Team has already released the iPhone 3.0 jailbreak Pwnage Tool, ultrasnow, and redsnow for the 2G iPod Touch, but a lot of people are probable wondering when will the iPhone 3G S jailbreak be made public. While they still haven’t given us an exact date on when it will be released, a hacker by the name of “geohot”with the help of the Chronic Dev team has unveiled these first images of the iPhone 3G S jailbreak in progress. If you’ve forgotten, “geohot” is the same guys who released an easy-to-use iPhone unlock in the past, and is responsible for the first injection vector for the iPhone 3G unlock. Needless to say, he’s very well versed in this kind of stuff. Unfortunately, there’s still no word yet on when this will be outed, but this does give us hope that things are moving along quite well for the iPhone 3G S jailbreak.

As far as the iPhone 3G S unlock is concerned, the iPhone Dev Team says that ultrasnow apparently works on the iPhone 3G S as well. Try it out and tell us how it goes for you.

Just last week we posted about the App Catalog hitting the 700,000 mark. Well, after close to a month of the Palm being out in the market, Palm’s app store has achieved a new feat by reaching 1 million downloads. That’s really pretty remarkable considering that Palm Pre sales have been so far crippled due to the lack of available, units and there’s only a measly 30 app available at the App Catalog for download. With such an impressive first month, we’re now more optimistic of the Palm’s chances in rivaling the iPhone and App Store with their brand new Palm Pre and App Catalog. Great job, Palm! Now set those new apps loose already so people can really have fun with the Palm Pre.

The Palm Pre app store, the App Catalog, is still in its infancy and is certainly nowhere near the size of the Apple App Store, but apparently, they’re doing quite well on their own. In fact, despite the obvious lack of mobile apps to offer, they’ve already managed to amass 666,511 downloads as of June 17th. Given the steady rise of downloads everyday, that should make it around 700,000 today. That’s really quite impressive, but I honestly don’t know if they can keep this trend up especially if they don’t improve on their app collection. Nonetheless, these figures are quite encouraging. The Palm Pre is already considered a real thorn to the backside of the iPhone, and it looks like their App Catalog is also shaping up to be a serious threat to the dominance of the App Store.

They do post a few reminders before you proceed to jailbreak your newly updated iPhone. First, and most important of all, do not upgrade to iPhone 3.0 if you rely on yellowsnow. This iPhone 3.0 jailbreak does not include ultrasnow which is needed to unlock 3.0-running iPhones and neither is yellowsnow capable of doing so.
