We’d like to inroduce our first “Dear PMP Today” blog post. We’ve been receiving quite a lot of requests and advice regarding portable media players and we usually help out when we can, and we do listen. However, resources are limited and some request, like this one, almost impossible. So we’ll leave it to you, dear readers, to help us out and the anonymous people looking for their ideal PMP. Leave a comment below, and LINKS are allowed (no salesmen please).

Dear PMPToday,

I have a question for you. I am looking for a pmp to fit my interests, I don’t know which one to find though. I have been looking at some lately at your site and at engadget, but I still can’t find one that fits my needs. I am looking for one that has the following:

-Huge amounts of storage, preferably 80gb+ (the more the merrier!)

-HD viewing on the built in screen

-3in or bigger screen (but not too big as I still want to put this in my pocket.)

-Not huge or ugly like the Newman’s M8000 [link]

-No software to load songs or movies

Optional extras that I would like but not necessary.

-Touchscreen

-Memory card slot

-Video out

So what do you guys think that I should get? I have been looking at the archos 5, but I don’t like the idea of spending an extra $200 in add-ons after I pay $550 for the device. I also looked at getting a ipod but I don’t like using itunes to load my movies. I am at a standstill of what to get. So please help me out here!

Sincerely,

An anonymous reader

Update: if you’re looking for another great Windows CE 5.0 phone, look no farther than the Newman VX1000, our gadget of the year for 2007.
Dell’s ready to bust out their second model in their netbook line aptly named the Inspiron Mini 12. With the Inspiron Mini 9 touting a near 9-inch display, this new Inspiron Mini 12 will, you guessed it, come with a bigger 12-inch 1280×800 max resolution screen. Options for this model will include a 1.3GHz Atom Z520 or 1.6GHz Atom Z530 processor, XP or Ubuntu OS for 2008 with Vista Home coming into play next year, 60GB or 80GB HDD, and an optional 6-cell battery for those who really need more juice than what the standard 3-cell battery can provide. With a larger screen, the Inspiron Mini 12 is definitely bigger than its predecessor but it manages to stay pretty slim measuring in at a mere 21mm in thickness. Reports indicate that it will hit Japan first and will eventually land in the US in November with a starting price of $600. No word on when it will roll out in other countries. This new Inspiron Mini is definitely a step up from the pioneering model from Dell, and you’ll have to pay the price for it. It’s a whole lot more expensive than the Inspiron Mini 9, but with a bigger screen, thinner profile and larger storage capacities, I think it’s worth the added cost.

Next year is the target release, and they’ll be showing it off as early as January in the annual gathering at CES. No word though on its OS or configuration, but what’s certain is that there’s more in store for Eee PC fanboys. Aside from the touch-enabled model, dual-core Atom 330 processors will soon be integrated into the line and they’ll get more competitive with the pricing aiming at a sub-$300 model. Now, if they can find a way to make the Eee as fashionable as the HP Mini Note, then I have no doubt that Asus will definitely reign supreme in the netbook department.

The first Eco Media Player from Trevor Baylis has been a critical hit if not necessarily a hit on the retail stores. Now the creator has come up with the second-generation dubbed Eco Media Player revolution. The design is sleeker and UI is more user-friendly - “sleeker” in tech speak. It plays MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG and WAV and some WMV and H.264 videos, which is an improvement over the music-only first Eco Media PMP. Storage has also been upped to 4GB. Power efficiency from cranking has been slightly improved to 45 minutes for the fully cranked DAP or 5 minutes more than the first one.
