iPhone 3G S, iPhone 3G available on Telus by November 5th

Telus has just announced that they’ll be ready to release their iPhone by November 5th giving erstwhile exclusive carrier Rogers some needed competition in Canada.

telus-iphone-3g-s

Telus’ 3-year contract price for the iPhone is just the same as Rogers: $99.99 for the iPhone 3G 8GB, $199.99 for the iPhone 3G S 16GB, and $299.99 for the iPhone 3G S 32GB. Their outright purchase price is actually even higher at $599.99, $699.99, and $799.99 for the iPhone 3G 8GB, iPhone 3G S 16GB, and iPhone 3GS 32GB respectively nearly $20 more expensive that what Rogers has. As such is the case, price will hardly be an issue when it comes to enticing customers and it will all boil down to the services they can provide iPhone users.

Yeah, it’s disappointing to see that it’s not priced a little more competitively, but hey, we’ve yet to hear from Bell so there might still be hope (emphasis on hope as our gut’s telling us this is highly unlikely) to see a slightly more affordable iPhone hit the market.

Wondering About Teclast T51, Audiophile’s Special

Tue, Oct 27, 2009

The Wolfson-chip, MVA-touchscreen, 1080p HD PMP that goes by the name of Teclast T51 has got us curious since we laid our sight on it on the Web. I wonder why online retailers are so eager to sell this model, preferring it in their inventory above every other PMP model. The video below might help. It’s not a bona fide iPhone clone. It’s actually quite a chunky, brick-lick device. The screen is bigger than iPhone’s at 4.3 inches. With the Teclast T51, you get a device focusing more on music and video. Even the game support is quite anemic. Ownta is selling an 8GB version for $150. Now, I’m not recommending the Teclast T51 but I know many of you have bought one. If you have a review or complaint about the product, feel free to use the comments area. If you have a longer review, PMP Today can publish it for you and give you full credit.

“Impending Apple Slate”, True or Slip of the Tongue?

apple-slate

It didn’t come from an Apple employee but an editor at New York Times.
Take his statement with a grain of salt, or head on over to Engadget for the video. The Nieman Journalism Lab has a transcript of what Keller said at the meeting. The relevant passage as follows:

Sixth, we need to figure out the right journalistic product to deliver to mobile platforms and devices. I’m hoping we can get the newsroom more actively involved in the challenge of delivering our best journalism in the form of Times Reader, iPhone apps, WAP, or the impending Apple slate, or whatever comes after that.

Now, I’m sure he doesn’t know anything officially, but what about unofficially?

We’ll admit, we’re pretty stoked about the Motorola Droid, but we can’t forget that there are other decent phones lined-up for next month and one such phone is the Palm Pixi.

Palm Pixi

This is Palm’s follow-up to their first webOS-powered device, the Palm Pre. The Palm Pixi is still a QWERTY although veering away from the slider design and also does away with WiFi but still boasts of EV-Do Rev. A connectivity. The Pixi also features a 2.63-inch 320×400 touchscreen, 2-megapixel camera with LED flash, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and EDR support, GPS, 3.5mm jack, and 8GB internal memory. It’ll be available beginning November 15th and will retail for $99.99 (after $50 instant rebate and $100 mail-in rebate) on a 2-yr contract with Sprint.

If you’re still not sure about the Pixi, you can check out our previous post where a couple Palm Pixi hands-on videos were showcased.

iPhone Amnesty Program launched in China

Sun, Oct 25, 2009

China Unicom iPhoneBoth the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S will officially be available in China by the end of this month courtesy of China Unicom. However, it seems that they’re not quite content in just nabbing new iPhone owners in the country, but are also keen on cashing in on those who already own an iPhone in China despite being purchased from the grey market and jailbroken. Shanghai Unicom, a subsidiary of China Unicom, has in fact already kicked off their amnesty program that permits grey market iPhone owners to sign up with them which will, in effect, allow them to avail of all the services provided for “legal” iPhone owners such as firmware updates and access to the official App Store without having to purchase a new and more expensive iPhone . This is a pretty bold move and the first we’ve heard of from an exclusive carrier of the iPhone, and while this may directly affect their initial iPhone sales, this will definitely help drive up plan subscriptions.

How about you guys? What do you think of this iPhone amnesty program? If the official carrier in your country offers up a similar iPhone amnesty program, will you sign up for it?

Nokia N900 release postponed to November

Sat, Oct 24, 2009

Like us, a lot of you guys out there were probably impressed with the Maemo-powered Nokia N900, and couldn’t wait to get your hands on one. People in the US were a little bit more fortunate than us here in Asian as they’ve gotten word that the Nokia N900 will be available for retail this month.

nokia-n900Unfortunately though, the latest news doesn’t bear glad tidings for hopeful N900 early adaptors. The release of the new Nokia flagship phone has been pushed back to November. Of course, given that November is just a stone’s throw away, this shouldn’t be much of a big deal for most people, but for those who suffered many a sleepless nights waiting for the availability of the N900 will definitely be disappointed.

As for its price, it’s reported to retail for around 500 Euros ($750) sans tax and subsidies. It’s pricey alright, but with its postponed release, this just gives you guys more time to save up for it.

Motorola Droid (Sholes) with AT&T, Rogers 3G passes FCC

Motorola Sholes with AT&T/Rogers 3G

We all know that the Motorola Sholes or now better known as the Droid will be coming to the US by way of Verizon so it’s not surprising that it’s been spotted over at the FCC. However, what’s intriguing about this particular Android-powered Motorola handset is that it comes with North American 3G compatible with networks like AT&T and Rogers. Interesting, isn’t it? Don’t get your hopes up too high though as this is certainly no guarantee that it will get picked up by either carrier, but with all the positive things being said about the Motorola Droid (or shall we call it the Sholes again since the Droid name only applies to Verizon Android phones) it surely wouldn’t hurt AT&T if this were their first Android offering.
